Happy Hours to Distract You from Work (and Life in General)

Procrasti-nation: face it; we look for the best ways to put off that project, that paper, that exam we know is creeping up on us at the week’s end. And we all L-O-V-E having a little somethin’ somethin’ to get us through our procrastination time… y’know what I’m sayin’??

Of course, I’m talking about the most joyous time of day: HAPPY HOUR!!! Discounted drinks, good times with friends, great food, and, most important of all, WASTING TIME! Check out these happy hours around DC to kill time in the happiest way possible:

Urbana: A little off-the-beaten-path, Urbana’s subterranean atmosphere is a draw for the true city lover. A bar and restaurant echoing Chelsea or Soho in NYC, this establishment draws a sizably professional crowd for their amazing happy hour deals every day of the week. With it being below street level (you kind of need to catch it or you’d walk right past it), you can ALWAYS find a seat at the bar. Happy hour recommendations include their amazing personal pizzas (margherita, prosciutto or Tuscan kale), oysters, $5 beers, and $6 glasses of wine. If you really feel like splurging, try one of their $7 cocktails like a Milano Mule and live like James Bond. Get a pizza and two glasses of prosecco and it will cost you $20; a meal fit for a king on a college kid’s/young professional’s budget.
-Location: Dupont Circle
-Time: Monday-Friday 3-7 PM

Madhatter: I’m sure you’ve had some of your more embarrassing college kid bar moments going out here on Thursday nights, but before the club gets jumpin’ jumpin’, this is single-handedly the most unexpected good happy hour ever. With Yuengling for $3, cocktails and wine for $5, and any bar snack you can think of for $5 (I’m talking mozzarella sticks, wings, nachos piled high with guac and salsa, you name it…), kick back and stay easy on the wallet. The deals don’t stop there; Tuesday after 8 PM is half-priced beers. What could be better than a bar that constantly allows you to save money while enjoying food and alcohol and procrastinating the day away?! Paradise I’d say.
-Location: Dupont Circle
-Time: Monday-Friday 4-8 PM

Catch 15: With its dimly-lit atmosphere, Catch 15 evokes one of those swanky bars you picture someone from Mad Men going to after a hard day’s work making deals and making money in your dapper suit and tie. Yes, it is patronized by a mostly young professional crowd, but that does NOT make the happy hour any less amazing. All wines, beer and cocktails (even oyster shooters) are $5, which rocks. But, to make it better, there is a crazy and delicious mix of bar snacks to order: fried mozzarella, flatbreads, sliders, and… best of all… $1.50 OYSTERS!!!! Order some oysters and wine and chill at the bar like the classy person you are. Eat that oyster and think: this is the procrastination I love!
-Location: McPherson Square
-Time: Monday-Friday 4-8 PM

El Centro: Two words: margaritas and tacos. What could make for a better happy hour? Head on out to either location for $5 margaritas and other deals on alcohol. But if you REALLY want to reap the deal, head out for Taco Tuesdays. What are Taco Tuesdays aside from the best thing EVER invented?! $2 tacos all night long. The chef makes three special tacos and you can choose from among them. Get as much or as little as you like! Once there was a duck confit one which was to die for. The tacos change every week, so add a little surprise to your Tuesday routine!
-Locations: Georgetown and U Street/14th Street
-Time: 4-7 Daily (just drinks) and Taco Tuesday every Tuesday until close

Drafting Table: Not in the mood for a normal 5 PM happy hour? Rather procrastinate with alcohol later? Not a problem. A beer drinker? EVEN BETTER! This quirky little 14th Street hangout boasts $4 drafts all night long (4 PM – 1 AM) Sunday through Tuesday and late night beer happy hours the rest of the week (10 PM – close). Great location, friendly bar staff, cute restaurant, an all-around great go-to when you need to grab that beer when you feel like doing nothing else.
-Location: U Street/14th Street
– Time: Sunday-Tuesday 4 PM-close, Wednesday-Friday 10 PM-close

Cheers to these happy hours helping you through your procrasti-struggles!
